Sci-Fi to Sous Chef, But This Robot Won't Take Over Your Kitchen

Meet the designer who made kitchen automation feel natural

Samsung's Bot Chef brings robotic assistance to home cooking through an AI-powered arm that can chop, stir, season, and cook alongside humans. Through voice commands and natural language processing, it reads recipes and executes cooking tasks while working with standard kitchen tools and utensils.

Industrial designer Tara Sriram led the project through its development during the COVID-19 pandemic, working with engineers to perfect the robot's ability to handle kitchen tools. Bot Chef's sensors allow it to adjust its grip pressure – firmly holding a whisk for beating eggs or gently squeezing a sauce bottle.

The project focused on human-robot collaboration rather than automation. Sriram's team at Samsung worked on multiple aspects including interaction design, form development, and gripper mechanics. They designed and built full-scale test kitchens to refine the concept through real-world testing.

What makes Bot Chef unique is its adaptability to existing kitchen environments. Instead of requiring special equipment, it works with regular kitchen tools. Even though this concept was first revealed in 2020 it still makes for a genuine kitchen assistant rather than just another smart appliance.
